These difficult encounters forced you to learn how to play, and prepared you for even more challenging encounters later in the game and the sense of accomplishment you got from finally beating these enemies made it all worth it. I am willing to bet that thousands of Xbox controllers were destroyed as a direct result of this game. I can remember the agonizing feeling of defeat after spending an hour losing to the same group of ninjas, or various boss encounters. In NG you cannot get away with button mashing your way through an encounter, you must know how to use your arsenal of moves and when to use them. In fact, I would say that it is still one of the most difficult games to come out since the NES era. The original NES Ninja Gaiden was known for being incredibly difficult, and the Xbox version was no different. Ninja Gaiden changed all that and turned out to be a re-make that lovers of the original could be proud of. It came out at a time when most new games offered no real challenge and re-makes of classic games were unimpressive to say the least. I would say the music incorporates aspects from hard rock, metal, electronic, classical, atmospheric and gothic sounds, and draws the player into the game like few other game soundtracks have ever done.įor me, Ninja Gaiden on the Xbox reinvented the action adventure genre. But perhaps the greatest part of the game is the soundtrack.

You start off with some of the best gear in the game and laugh as you easily cut down enemies up until a few minutes in, where you meet an entity who robs you of your equipment and forces you to start from scratch. SotN has the perfect balance of adventure and RPG mechanics, with a steady flow of character progression throughout the game. The gameplay is challenging and rewarding, and there are enough items, spells, and secrets to uncover to make this game enjoyable time after time. This might be my favorite game of all time, and I still play through it at least once a year.
